Veterans' Day

In honor of Christina Hughes-Babb's dad, I share this photo of members of the Greater Dallas Veterans who served as honor guard at the Wal-Mart preview Saturday. They were happy about their role opening the store, but they were super-stoked about the chance to participate in Tuesday's parade in downtown Dallas.The chaps I spoke to were members of Jewish War Veterans, but many veterans groups will participate, they told me. Events begin at 11 am at City Hall.

Happy birthday, Marines

Seldom do I get special requests from my dad (which is odd because I'm constantly requesting stuff from him), but last weekend we were visiting and he said to me, "next week on that blog (in a tone suggesting it's not in fact a real word) don't forget to wish all the Marines a 'happy birthday'".

Indeed, today is the 233rd anniversary of the birth of the United States Marine Corps. So, happy birthday and semper fidelis to my dad, my grandpa, the running club Marines I recently wrote about, and all the marines and marine families out there celebrating the day today.

Tomorrow, of course, is Veterans Day, and the big parade will get under way at 11 a.m. at Dallas City Hall.

LHHS students cast their first votes

The Dallas Morning News was on hand Thursday to photograph, interview, and video about 50 Lake Highlands seniors walking to the Audelia Library to cast their very first votes. Not all in the senior class have yet turned 18, and even fewer have registered to become eligible for the privilege, but it was still a good-sized group that trekked to the polls. "I'm proud of these students for wanting to make a difference," said assistant principal Ramona Powers, who accompanied them to the polls. "They are learning an important lesson about citizenship and responsibility."
