LHHS organizations and clubs come up with some innovative ways to earn money for trips, equipment and so forth — you’ve got all night drum-a-thons and adult dance clinics — but the Little Elm marching band might rival LH when it comes to creative fundraising. Trust me, this is good:
They are putting kitschy pink flamingos in neighborhood yards, and then charging homeowners to remove them. It’s a good-natured takeover of sorts, with simple demands— for $20 the band members will remove the “harmless” flamingos and for $25 you can have them sent to someone else’s yard.
Actually, I have to give a shout out to Lake Highlander Terri Hawkins, who launched the same sort of flamingo fundraiser for the LHHS seniors' graduation party in 2006. (It was long before Christina joined us at the Advocate.)
That was one of my all-time favorite stories to write, mostly because of Hawkins' hilarious personality and great one-liners, such as: "It's like approved vandalism." My favorite part was that she referred to herself as the "Head Mother Flocker".

I stand corrected! Here's my do-over: change "Little Elm might rival Lake Highlands" to "of course, LH thought of it first" ...

My daughter is a 2005 LHHS grad, now a college senior, and these flamingos have been around as a fundraising option since she was a freshman. If my memory is accurate, they were much more popular even before her high school days, but they seem to have fallen by the wayside in favor of more lucrative opportunities. Seems to me like a much more 'fun' way of raising money.... maybe it's time to bring it back to life?
