Part-time job. Ever hear the saying, "you get what you pay for"? According to an article in 2006, the mayor gets $60K and city council gets $38,500. It would seem to me we might be better off doubling salaries and requiring this be their ONLY job so we have leaders that have more time to dedicate to planning, learning, listening, etc - all those things that they are currently doing "part time". It might also open up the candidate pool and get a wider mix of citizens providing public service.

I wish Angela Hunt were our councilperson. She's the only one who half the time seems to genuinely make an effort to understand the impact of their votes.

I absolutely agree with you on all points Brian. Having full 'ownership' of a paid position tends to make one more focused on the job one's hired to do. Trying to juggle two jobs (not to mention full lives) reduces the quality of both.

Couldn't agree with you more. Angela appears to be the lone council member that isn't purely focused on increasing tax revenue - she wants quality developments that will make Dallas a better place to live and meld in with the surroundings. Make Dallas a better place to live - and tax revenues will surely follow... haven't we learned that the other direction doesn't work?

Thx for the comments. Heck, that salary along with the ability to possibly help shape Dallas' future would certainly make me think long and hard about running! If only I didn't love my job so much...
