Thanks ever so much for the public spanking this last two days folks! I feel it’s almost safe for me to show my face on the mean streets of Lake Highlands again. Y’all have put me in my place, I’ve slowed down and seen the light. I’ll never again let it slip that I slipped up. It’s a far too human inadequecy to show to those who never err. If there’s ever a next time, I’ll skulk quietly.
Baaaaack to the point I was trying to make about the ‘surprise’ Constable and trying to figure out what Constables actually do. My investigation has continued. I read my lengthy citation carefully. I opted to pay the $221 on line with my credit card. To my way of thinking that was the most efficient, good citizen thing to do - get the county their money. Nowhere did it say that by doing so I would damage my permanent record and my insurance would increase. Nowhere. It said I could plead guilty and pay my fine. It said I could plead no contest (which seems the same to me), take a drivers course and pay my fine. Having never received a speeding ticket I’m naive about this stuff because I’m (usually) a law abiding driver. Swear, didn’t even occur to me to NOT pay promptly.
So I changed my mind about my ‘plea’ and made some calls. The JP Collections Supervisor Phyllis was very nice, the County Treasurer Mr. Jim Cook was very nice. But they were at a loss on how to advise me on changing my mind/plea since I’ve already paid. I told them both I was very happy for Dallas County to keep the $221 and I’d be happy to take the drivers course (because I obviously NEED the drivers course). I expressed my sincere loathing at being a ‘marked’ woman. Because these good folks have never encountered someone like me they referred me to Judge Al Cercone.
I’ll be visiting with him first thing Monday morning. Since I’ll be at his mercy, I’ll opt not to ask about the 92,000 unserved warrants. (Phyllis and Mr. Cook were concerned about me cancelling my Amex payment and starting all over because, they said, that would be considered like a bad check and a warrant for my arrest could be issued. I’d become 92,001).
I’ll defer from suggesting that 35 mph on that section of Walnut Hill NOT during school is unrealistic and unenforceable (unless someone hires Constables to hide behind phone poles for a few days to meet a quota).
I’ll refrain from pointing out that driving defensively by maintaining 35mph on certain roads (Walnut Hill included) is extremely difficult considering the tailgaters in all three lanes are going faster then me and tailgating is a far more dangerous hazard.
And I won’t, I really won’t, ask the good Judge what’s being done with the 49 mil.
I will, however, continue being vigilant about the cars zooming down Lakemere and Ferndale at 55mph and I’ll continue being honked at while I drive 15mph in school zones. I’ll also look forward to the September issue and Keri’s response.
You can speed up in the school zones... the speed limit is 20... ;-)
